Installing MariaDB on Windows

This tutorial teaches you to install MariaDB on your Windows computer.

There are two types of MariaDB downloads for Windows: ZIP files and MSI packages. The MSI packages are recommended for most users, unless you’re already a MariaDB pro who’s certain you want the ZIP files. The MariaDB MSI packages work on the following versions of Windows:

  • Windows Vista
  • Windows 7
  • Windows 8
  • Windows Server 2008 (including Server 2008R2)
  • Windows Server 2012 (including Server 2012R2)

Go to https://downloads.mariadb.org and download the current stable release of MariaDB.

Find the 64-bit or 32-bit MSI package. For most computers, the 64-bit MSI package is probably the one that you need, especially if you have more than 4 GB of RAM.

When the download finishes, launch the MSI installer by double-clicking it. Remember that any changes you make in the installer can be altered later in the my.ini file, if you choose.

If you’re installing MariaDB for the first time, remember to set the root user password. Unless it’s necessary, don’t enable access from remote machines for ‘root’ user or create an anonymous account.

If you’ll need to access the databases from a different computer, check the Enable networking option. If not, leave it unchecked.

After the installation is finished, you will see a MariaDB folder added to your start menu. Click Finish to quit the installer.

Done! You’ve now installed MariaDB on your Windows computer.
